Robert Hoge was born with a giant tumour on his forehead, severely distorted facial features and legs that were twisted and useless. His mother refused to look at her son, let alone bring him home. But home he went, to a life that, against the odds, was filled with joy, optimism and boyhood naughtiness. Home for the Hoges was a bayside suburb of Brisbane. Robert’s parents, Mary and Vince, knew that his life would be difficult, but they were determined to give him a typical Australian childhood. So along with the regular, gruelling and often dangerous operations that made medical history and gradually improved Robert’s life, there were bad haircuts, visits to the local pool, school camps and dreams of summer sports. UGLY is Robert’s account of that life, from the time of his birth to the arrival of his own daughter. It is a story of how the love and support of his family helped him to overcome incredible hardships. It is also the story of an extraordinary person living an ordinary life, which is perhaps his greatest achievement of all. Add to Cart.

Relationships: the good the bad & the ugly
We all know too well the many high-profile stories of big tech projects failing to deliver for the client, going way over budget and over time or both. The public sector here in Australia has seen some spectacular tech failures, from the robodebt debacle, the MyGov website crash as Australians who lost their jobs due to COVID looked for a lifeline, and the QLD Health payroll scandal to name a few. The private sector has seen its fair share of tech failures too.
And often rightly so. Many people see the Australian subsidiaries of global vendors as glorified sales offices and not innovators. In this episode of The CIO Show, CIOs and vendors discuss the good and bad of enterprise technology projects and what needs to happen if the industry is to fix its poor track record of failures.

With ghosting, breadcrumbing and Gatsbying prevalent, the modern Millennial is now on at least one dating platform – you guessed it, traditional dating has gone digital! Dating trends not only signify how daters are interacting but present real-life manifestations of what the dating world has become. When ghosting became popular it showed how fatigued people had become with the dating game — choosing to ignore a fling with radio silence rather than facing those horrible break-up tears.
I know that a lot of men have been guilty of these bad dating habits, but a lot of people discount how women can also embrace these behaviours. Prowling happens when someone first ghosts you, only to re-appear weeks or months later as if nothing happened. This leads them to reignite the flame sporadically with you, despite all of their previous signals implying they were just not that into you. A lot of people complain about these bad dating behaviours but continue to engage with them.
If someone has ghosted and then prowled you, there is no shame in ghosting them right back. There are now full-scale businesses launching around the concept of people taking over your swipe apps and organising your love life for you. How would you feel if you discovered the person you were keen on only chose to reach out because one of their mates mindlessly swiped? An outsourced date can be easy to identify; they know little about you despite chatting for a while, they constantly forget interactions and experience downright confusion about who you are.

Rapists and domestic violence thugs go online to find victims. You go out on a few dates. Have a great time. And at some point, you decide he or she might be the one so you welcome then into your home and your life. It’s a frightening scenario and, sadly, it is one that is repeated daily across the country. Dating apps and social media forums are perfect hunting grounds for abusers prowling for their prey. In October last year – after a long and exhaustive police investigation – Hartland pleaded guilty to raping three women and sexually assaulting another.
Over the next five months – until March – he continued using dating and social media apps. I wrote about Hartland when he was bailed after the guilty plea and in the weeks that followed, multiple women contacted me to reveal he was back on Tinder, Plenty of Fish, Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram. In fact, he was so brazen he actually contacted me via Facebook to remonstrate me for discussing his case. Hartland was eventually charged for breaching his bail conditions over his presence online but was again bailed to continue his activities unabated.
Dubbed the Tinder Rapist by the media, Hartland is now serving a minimum of 11 years in prison.

The newest addition to the online dating scene welcomes users to Instead, this relatively simple site asks people who do not like what they see in the mirror to join up and meet someone else who suffers the same problem. Purporting to have members in the UK, America, Australia, Ireland and Canada, the site has a tongue-in-cheek way of looking at singledom for the non-sexy. The makers of TUBB insist that most daters are not good looking, “so instead of fishing in a small pool of prettiness and getting nowhere dive into an ocean of uglies and have more choice”.
They believe “non-pretty people” are often not as shallow as others, tend to be more considerate and loyal and try harder in bed. There are other perks to dating someone who is not pretty, the site says. It also says non-pretty people have lower expectations of a first date. Site founder Howard James runs a number of niche dating sites, including ForgetDinner.
